Day 397 found us in the historic city of Cusco, where we took the opportunity to unwind and immerse ourselves in its charm after enduring an intense week navigating treacherous and winding mountain roads. The city’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere offered the perfect setting for a much-needed respite. We wandered through its cobblestone streets, admired the awe-inspiring blend of Inca and colonial architecture, and soaked in the energy of its bustling plazas. It was a day to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with the culture of this mesmerizing Andean gem.
On Day 398, we were set to embark on an off-road adventure into the mountains. But before bidding farewell to the welcoming city of Cusco, we decided to visit the historic site of Sacsayhuamán. According to legend, the construction of Cusco during the Inca period began precisely at the foot and on the slopes of Sacsayhuamán Hill. This awe-inspiring archaeological fortress was the perfect farewell to the city’s deep historical roots.
Then, the Camel Trophy spirit kicked in. We headed into the mountains on a muddy dirt road that was left slick and treacherous like butter after heavy rains. It tested our vehicle and our resolve at every turn. By the end of the day, we had covered 104 kilometers—a journey full of challenges, grit, and breathtaking views.
