On day 411, we continue our journey northward. Today’s destination is Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
We visited Cotopaxi National Park, which is centered around the highest active volcano in Ecuador, reaching an elevation of 5,897 meters. Cotopaxi is renowned for its symmetrical conical shape and snow-capped summit, making it a favorite for climbers and tourists alike. The volcano is located approximately 50 km south of Quito. The last significant eruption of Cotopaxi occurred in 2015, when it released an ash plume over 2 km high. Due to its activity and proximity to densely populated areas, the volcano is under constant surveillance by experts.
We ascended to the highest point accessible by vehicle — 4,800 m. However, the summit of the volcano remained shrouded in clouds.
Quito is not only the capital but also the political, economic, and cultural hub of Ecuador. Founded in the late 1st millennium AD, it sits at an elevation of 2,850 m and has a population of 1.8 million.
Throughout the day, we covered a distance of 240 km.
Day 412 was a rest day in Quito. The team spent time exploring the sights and the historical part of the ancient city.
