On August 1st we visited Zermatt. This city is famed as a mountaineering and ski resort of the Swiss Alps. But until the mid-19th century, it was predominantly an agricultural community. In the evening we took part in the celebration of the Swiss national holiday!
The next day we walked in the mountains around Zermatt. We were a bit unlucky with the weather, the Matterhorn was slightly covered by clouds. Otherwise, it was a great day. Excellent infrastructure. With several transfers, we climbed almost 4000 m. Lots of people. They climb the nearest peaks, ski on the glacier. Just walking. We spent almost 8 hours on the walk.
Then we arrived in Chamonix, the ski and mountaineering capital of the Alps. On the way, we passed through the town of Martigny, where the view was incredible! In the evening, we cooked a barbecue and chatted until nightfall.
We also took the lift from Chamonix to an altitude of 3,842 meters. At the top, there is an entire system of observation platforms and transfers to other cable cars. The weather was beautiful, and the views were impressive. We spent about an hour at that height for a bit of acclimatization.
And now we’re heading towards Geneva.
